Winter Storm and Careless Driving Cause Several Utah Auto Accidents

Utah is certainly receiving its fair share of snow.  I’m sitting here in the Provo office and it hasn’t stopped snowing since I got here! Those of you who drove to work this morning probably  noticed your commute took much longer than expected because of snow, slush and ice that our covering roads all throughout the state. The snowy weather coupled with numerous accidents all throughout the valley made for a messy commute.

The first Utah car accident was a four-car accident near 3900 South. Troopers say one of the vehicles was driving too fast for the weather conditions, lost control and flew across all lanes of traffic eventually hitting another car. After that initial crash, a third car spun out of control. The final car was a Volkswagen Beetle that attempted to steer away form the accident but could not gain control in time and rear-ended a Nissan Altima. The accident blocked traffic for several hours. KSL news reports that no one was hurt in this Salt Lake City auto accident, only property damage to all four vehicles.

The next crash happened near the south end of the valley at 10600 South. A pickup truck lost control and slammed into a bus full of LDS missionaries on their way to the airport. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital and there were no reported injuries on the bus.

UHP Trooper Chris Cox offers this counsel: “I hope people will take the time to check their tires, air pressures, and slow down and increase their following distance.” Troopers caution drivers to slow down and allow yourself enough time to get where you need to go. Increasing your speed and following too close are recipes for disaster in winter weather.

This storm has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory for northern, central and southern Utah.
