Sevier County Sheriff Hit By Car Before He Fell

Sgt. Franco Aguilar was hit and pushed off a bridge on Sunday, May 2, 2010 in Sevier County, Utah. Authorities were initially unsure whether Sgt. Aguilar jumped from Interstate 70 to avoid a second car sliding toward the scene or if he was hit and pushed off. Officials now report that Sgt. Franco Aguilar had responded to a Utah auto accident involving a Toyota Camry that had crashed into a concrete barrier. While responding to the this accident, a Chevrolet Suburban driven by an 18-year-old from Eage Mountain, Utah, slid and slammed head-on into the Camry which then hit Aguilar forcing him off the the bridge. KSL news reports that Aguilar fell 103 feet to his death.

Sgt. Aguilar had worked in law enforcement since 2000. He leaves behind a wife and five children. Lt. Sean Robbins was a close friend and colleague of Mr. Aguilar’s and he had the difficult task of informing the man’s family. “It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, the hardest thing I’ll ever do, but it was something that needed to be done,” Robbins said. Sgt. Aguilar was very well liked and flags are at half staff to honor this fallen officer.

My heart goes out to the family of Sgt. Aguilar’s family as they attempt to cope with this tragic loss. I offer them my thoughts and prayers.
