24 year-old Provo resident, Deanne Jones was riding in the back seat of a westbound 1998 Nissan 200 SX on Highway 6 when the car rolled near Carbon County. The Utah auto accident occurred on Saturday July 18, 2009 reports the Salt Lake Tribune.
At 12:35 a.m. the car was in Wellington when the 18-year-old driver fell asleep. He drifted across an oncoming lane of traffic then off the shoulder. They hit an embankment killing Jones on impact. The driver, along with a 28-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries.
Authorities have ruled that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the accident.
My sincere condolences to the family of Ms. Jones. Fatigued driving, unfortunately, claims victims every year. It is an entirely preventable phenomena, one I personally think Utah, with its large expanse of roadways, should do more to prevent.
The family of Deanne Jones is now left with a wrongful death claim against the driver of the car Deanne was in. It is likely that all insurance policies in force–including Deanne’s–will be collectible in this tragic car accident.
